Local rules
From the 1st October 2011, until further notification the following Local rules will be in operation.
Relief from embedded ball through the green (rule 25-2)
A ball that is embedded in its own pitch mark through the green (i.e. not in a hazard) may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.
Relief from mud on ball Rule (20-1)
A ball that lies on closely-mown area, through the green, may be lifted and cleaned, without penalty. The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted under this local rule.
Having lifted the ball it must be replaced on a spot within six inches of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.
Gents Matchplay Competitions
The draws for the 2012 Matchplay competitions have now been posted. This is a busy time for the course as during the course of the summer over 500 ties have to be completed,200 before the end of May, and with that in mind I ask that members consider some of the following points
- As in the last few years there is no challenger, both players are expected to make effort to contact each other, failure to do so may mean both players fail to continue in the competition.
- Because of the large number of ties to be played, and as many members are playing in up to 5 competitions please try and arrange ties early, this will also allow time for re arranged ties in case of no result or bad weather.
- Over the first 2 months do not expect to arrange a time and have immediate access to the tee. If the time you have chosen is convenient for both players it was probably convenient for several others playing ties as well.
- Please consider that if you have arranged to meet and play 30 minutes prior to a tee reservation you may be in a queue and might not make the 1st tee before the tee reservation commences. Tee reservations will be protected.
- The privilege of playing through because you are playing a tie only applies for Ralston Golf Club competitions, ad hoc or 'works' ties do not entitle players to claim precedence.
- Please check your preferred contact number is displayed on the contact sheet, if it requires updating please telephone the office.
I would also ask that members watch for persons making improper use of draw sheets and competition sheets on the notice boards. Last year unwarranted nicknames and comments were appended to members names on the matchplay sheets, I apologised to the persons concerned on behalf of the club and assured them that the club would take action against anyone identified as being responsible for this. Already this year two characters from fictional works had to be removed from one of the matchplay sheets, this only causes additional work and makes checking the draws difficult.
I hope you all enjoy your ties, and look forward to seeing you on finals day.

Recording of Away Scores
It has become apparent to the Match Committee that more and more members are taking the opportunity to play qualifying golf competitions at “Away” courses.
To ensure that members maintain their proper handicap with their Home course, Ralston Golf Club, all members are obliged to record all required details within the Away Score Register retained on the window sill of the upstairs Gents locker room.
Players have a responsibility to ensure that in competitions they do not play off a higher handicap than they are entitled to.
Rules of Golf 6.2
CONGU Unified Handicap system 8.10.

Medal update and information.
The Match Committee will endeavour to post within the Clubhouse, a ballot sheet for Saturday medals/ competitions 16 days before the due date, and between the hours of 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
All Sunday competitions will have a ballot sheet posted within the Clubhouse 14 days before due date, and between the hours of 1pm and 2pm.
Would members please consider their fellow members by only appending their own names to ballot /competition sheets. NB - Any members sharing similar initials as others please append their full name.
It is the members responsibility to append his current handicap to all medals/ competition ballot sheets to assist in ensuring inclusion in the appropriate class/division. If this is omitted then this could lead to a member being wrongly included in a class/division that they may not be comfortable in.
