Mixed competition Shotgun Start

The above competition will take place on Sunday 3rd July 2011. The Shotgun start will be at 1;00 PM.
In order to avoid unnecessarily restricting other members play on that Sunday morning, the competition competitors will be positioned at holes 1-12.
This allows members who wish to play on Sunday morning the opportunity to commence a round If they start prior to 11:00 AM.
Any members who are playing the course and are ahead of the 12th Green when the shotgun/Horn fires may continue to play out their round as long as they stay ahead of the competition. Players who have not cleared the 12th by 12:55 PM will have to clear the course.
Members not in the competition and wishing to play the course may tee off after the match on the first Tee (from 1-10PM until 2-45PM) Thereafter the shotgun matches will be arriving on the 18th to play up the first and have priority on the course.
This option has been decided as an alternative to closing the course at 09:00AM on a Sunday morning and allows as much play as possible whilst allowing the competition to continue.

New Bunkers
We would like to ask members to push the sand into bunkers when raking them, rather than pulling the sand towards the edges. The new bunker rakes work better when they are pushed rather than pulled. It also stops the sand from being pulled up over the grass edges which causes the edge to die and become worn.

Commercial Advertising Available
With the new 3rd Tee being measured and included in the course, we are about to have the course cards reprinted. It is our intention to have the new cards printed in a three or four part format which will allow us to have space for commercial advertising on the score cards. This will help offset the cost of printing.
The advertising space will be 130mm X 80mm ( one page of a score card) or 65mm x 80mm (½ page of a score card) and the respective costs £450 and£225 approximately, depending on demand.
The print run will be a minimum of 20 000 cards, a good chance for any local business to obtain large scale advertising. If you are interested, or know any business which might be, then please contact the club on 0141 882 1349 or e-mail to thesecretary@ralstongolf.co.uk

Gents Medal Saturday 9th April
As many people will have noticed, on Saturday the course set for the medal had the 10th tee placed on the yellow teeing area. Many people have asked if due to this the medal should be processed as a non-counter ( scores not to count for handicap).
After review of the CONGU rules and the decisions on the rules, the distance involved, approx 20 yards, is within the limits set by CONGU. I am therefore allowing this competition to stand as a qualifying competition. The Competition Standard Scratch on the day matched the course SSS of 69 so the extra 20 yards had no great effect on our normal scoring.

Sunday 10 April

Congratulations to John & James McEwan on winning the Gus Mcleod Cup, they beat Edward Barrett & Johnny Mullaney 2 and 1 in the final held today.
Gus Mcleod Winter Fourball Final
Sunday saw the final of the winter fourball competition, when John and James McEwan played Jonny Mullaney and Eddie Barrett.
The match teed off at 1015 under blue skys and rising temperatures. Both teams were evenly matched and by the seventh had won one hole each , including two impressive birdies at the 7th, to remain level. James McEwan then stepped up and took the 8th and 9th holes to lead by 2 at the turn.
The next change was at the 12th when John McEwan took the hole for a three shot lead, and the spectators must have thought the match was all but done. Jonny and Edd however were not giving up and recovered by taking the 13th and 15th. At the 16th we saw why James has opted for an experienced partner rather than youth, John was the player who held it together going up 16 and secured the hole comfortably with a net birdie. A half at 17 was enough to secure the Gus McLeod Cup for the McEwans.
A good days golf was enjoyed by all players, and well done to all 4 for making the final. Congratulations to John and James McEwan, see you at the prizegiving.

Bunker reconstruction work will begin on the 31st of January. This work will be carried out by Souters Sports. This company have been used by many courses in the area and we are certain that the job will be carried out to a high standard. All bunkers on the first nine holes will have the exsisting sand stripped out and new drainage installed if needed. The old bunker sand will be used to shape the new bunkers with rolling turf faces and new sand will be placed in the bunkers. This work should be completed and the new bunkers in play for the start of the season. However some of the newly turfed banks may remain GUR until the turf has established.

Analysis of the field of players taking part in Saturday medals during 2009 showed that the average field numbered 150, with a top field of 164, on one occasion.
Numerous complaints were received due to the length of medal rounds exceeding 41/2 hrs.
The Council recognises the need to enable as many members to participate in Saturday medals whilst maintaining under 4hrs rounds
On the qualifying medals due to be played on Saturday 1st and 8th May,2010 the medals will commence at 7:00am with 9 minute gaps and conclude at 3:06. This will allow 165 tee off times available to the members. This is a trial which will be evaluated by the council.

The greens staff checked all the greens this morning and there is still a hard frost about 2-3 inches under the surface. This kind of frost can cause roots to break under the surface when walked on , this will cause the grass to die back. This is the reason that we are still on winter greens and possibly could be over the weekend. Members can refer to the frost damage article on the site for more info.

Greenstaff will do everything possible to open the course for play as soon as possible. At present the damage that could be caused by opening the course when it is so wet would not be repairable until the summer. We must also take the safety of golfers into consideration.
Hopefully we will see a change in the weather soon and we would like to thank the members for their patience through this bad spell of weather.

It has become apparent to the Match Committee that more and more members are taking the opportunity to play qualifying golf competitions at “Away” courses.
To ensure that members maintain their proper handicap with their Home course, Ralston Golf Club, all members are obliged to record all required details within the Away Score Register retained on the window sill of the upstairs Gents locker room.
Players have a responsibility to ensure that in competitions they do not play off a higher handicap than they are entitled to.

Members are advised that they can play golf this Sunday but only if they tee off prior to 8:15am – the tee must be cleared by this time. Officially, the tee is reserved from 7:30am to 3:30pm, but we are hopeful members will appreciate the gesture being made here and allow the competition to flow freely.
The Tee-off times for Ralston members, playing in the Mixed Open on Sunday 3rd May, are now displayed on the locker room notice boards.

New Flag System
The new pins and flags have arrived and will be used from Friday 10th April for the summer. It was suggested at the last Greens Meeting to have three different coloured flags to distinguish between the front, middle and back of the greens. The three colours in use will be
Red – Front
White – Middle
Yellow – Back
Hopefully the membership will find this a fairly useful and straightforward system to operate and remember.

Fairway spraying is going ahead today.

Thursday 26 March

The Newton Shield fixtures for 2009 have been posted on the Newton Shield page.

Monday 23 March

On Sunday the 15th of March, greens staff put some winter greens on due to wet weather, when the course was inspected the next morning it became apparent that the 9th and 17th greens had been put back on the main greens. This was not done by any of the greens staff. This has caused severe damage to these greens and will cause the putting surface weeks if not months to recover. We would like to ask for the members support to make sure this is not repeated. Only the greens staff have authority to put greens on or off.

Friday 20 March

The Fairways will be back in play from Saturday March 21.
The following competitions have been cancelled due to the condition of the course and the on going drainage works at the 16th hole.

If the weather is not suitable on this day an alternative date will be arranged and members will be informed via the web-site.

Monday 19 May

Ralstons Junior Newton Shield Team had another great win tonight against Cochrane Castle.

Ralston's reign as Jessiman Trophy Champions came to an abrupt halt, on Sunday, when the team lost to Clober Golf Club, by just 1 hole, in the 1st round of the competition. In an exciting match, the big hitting Clober team, holed the putts at important times, to see off Ralston. It was ironic that the Ralston boys "lipped out" with crucial putts, and missed some makeable ones, whereas Clober holed a few "tram liners", which proved the difference at the end of the day.

At the weekend after greenstaff had set up the course someone proceeded to move some of the tee markers to the full width of the tees. This is why we would like to ask for the members help to make sure this does not happen again.

Greens
The course is closed today due to the heavy rain and high winds last night. The high winds have caused a number of trees to fall on different areas of the course. Most of the trees that have been damaged are mature conifers. These trees are shallow rooted and the poor drainage in a number of areas of the course has been a contributing factor. Due to this unexpected damage the next week or so will have to be dedicated to tidying these areas and ensuring all trees are made safe.

Tuesday 6 November

The high temperatures that we are experiencing just now combined with the wet weather is causing Fusarium on the greens to thrive. We have been spraying Fungicide to combat this. With the attack of disease being so severe one application has not been enough to cure this. Throughout this attack of disease we have been working closely with our agronomist Neil Baldwin and he has recommended that we apply one or possibly two more applications of Fungicide to stop this attack.
Cimate change is starting to have a major effect on the amount of disease we are having to manage on our greens here at Ralston. If members would like more information about the effects of climate change on our golf course the area manager of STRI has done a report that can be seen on www.sgeg.org.uk/. Some copies of this will also be placed in the bar area for members to read.
