Obituary - Dr Ian Russell

It is with deep regret we have to announce the death of one of our longest standing members, Dr Ian Russell.

Ian had been a member for over 80 years being a junior and then senior member going on to be one of the most popular Captains we have ever had. Ian was a true gentleman and always found time to speak to members when he came down to the Club.

Ian was a great supporter of Junior Golf and during his long playing life he was a formidable opponent.

During his younger years he played in and won the Kildalton Cross in Islay, a prestigious scratch event.

During his time on Council he planted daffodils high on the 18th spelling out RALSTON, which could be seen from aircraft flying over. Some of the letters are still visible to this day.

If you happened to be a patient of Ian’s then you would often get a putting lesson thrown in when you visited his surgery!

Ian was a valued member of the Past Captains Association and attended all the dinners held in the clubhouse. Until COVID closed us down Ian and his wife Nan were regular attendees for the “Thursday Night Specials” and very often Sunday Lunches.

Ian was without doubt the most courteous gentleman anyone would come across at Ralston and our thoughts go out to Nan and the family at this sad time.
